They got the bastard. Good work, USN.

What is happening in Zahedan today?

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is in southern Afghanistan lately.

U.S. Defense Secretary Gates Visits Afghanistan
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates paid a visit to U.S. troops in Afghanistan, arriving in Kabul on Thursday, as shared in a feature on The Washington Post. His visit, according to the feature, is happening during the time of the arrival of the last U.S. reinforcements in the country. Secretary Gates was met by NATO commander Gen. David Petraeus upon his arrival in Afghanistan.

On Friday, the Secretary travelled to Kandahar province…

Whenever one of these big shots shows up over in that part of the world, I look for something to squeeze up to the surface in Zahedan, like puss oozing out of a zit.

More unusual activity in Zahedan: vest bombers

From Planet-Iran.com, more news of violence.
UPDATE 3 >> Bombing in the Baluch city of Zahedan claims 30; Jundallah claims responsibility (vidoes)

More people die in Iran. This time it is Zahedan. It’s bad.

But I thought the Sunni would be using truck bombs, not vest bombers. The suicide vest is more like Hamas.

I still wonder where Osama bin Laden in hiding out: somewhere up in Khorasan, the recent guess? Perhaps in the country between Zahedan and Kandahar as I have been speculating this last year or so? Over in Pakistan?

Obama knew.

It has been interesting the past year, trying to figure out what the heck is going on in Iran vis-a-vis Osama bin Laden and al Quaeda. The Iran election crisis a year ago brought the attention of many eyes to Iran in a new way, so it might be that the walk to freedom in Iran will also work out eventually to the capture of a major criminal terrorist.

Mullah Omar protecting bin Laden in Helmand?

Kandahar is looking down the barrel of a combined forces counter-insurgency move. Like Fallujah.

Newspaper stories from London speculate about Taliban’s Mullah Omar and his comrades in Quetta, Pakistan being interested in talking peace, viz.

Taliban’s supreme leader signals willingness to talk peace
Stephen Grey in Kandahar
The Sunday Times, April 18, 2010

The supreme leader of the Taliban, Mullah Mohammed Omar, has indicated that he and his followers may be willing to hold peace talks with western politicians.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, two of the movement’s senior Islamic scholars have relayed a message from the Quetta shura, the Taliban’s ruling council, that Mullah Omar no longer aims to rule Afghanistan. They said he was prepared to engage in “sincere and honest” talks…

What does it mean?

  1. The reports are true, and the Taliban are ready to become normal political participants.
  2. The reports are false, and the Taliban are using the jaw jaw method to stall for time.
  3. Maybe there is another interpretation.

Perhaps the Taliban are worried about purple fingertips. The intractable Fallujah/Anbar situation resolved into normal political participation. A 2008 review from Fox News:

Last One Turn Out the Lights: Marines Quietly Begin Leaving Bases in Iraqi Cities
Jennifer Griffin
Fox News, Friday, October 17, 2008

But perhaps the biggest sign that the situation has changed for the better for Sunnis living in Anbar: With the help of the Marines and the Iraqi police, nearly 100 percent of the eligible voting population were registered a month ago to vote in upcoming provincial elections.

“They seem to add another political party every day,” Kelly said. “We didn’t have a single security violation of any kind. They’re at least going to give the electoral process a shot … at least going to give democracy a chance.”

The Sunnis, who fueled a large part of Iraq’s insurgency, boycotted the last election for Parliament with only 3 percent of Sunnis participating. Now they feel they have a stake in the government.

In any case, the Taliban talking with powers that be has a protecting effect on Osama bin Laden if he really is in the south of Afghanistan, somewhere between Zahedan, Iran and Quetta, Pakistan, between Kandahar, Afghanistan and Zabol, Iran.

My opinion is (b), since the president has shown ineptitude with Iran’s time-buying nuclear tactics: Jaw jaw with an Oval Office fool until you can nuke Israel, then who cares? Similarly, because the US recently displayed hostility to Hamid Karzai, the Taliban can jaw jaw with the Oval Office fool until they can get a long knife into Karzai’s neck.

Zahedan: Iranians train Taliban to use roadside bombs

More connection between perfidious Iranian terror masters in Zahedan and the area of operations in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan.

Iranians train Taliban to use roadside bombs – Times Online.

TALIBAN commanders have revealed that hundreds of insurgents have been trained in Iran to kill Nato forces in Afghanistan.

The commanders said they had learnt to mount complex ambushes and lay improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which have been responsible for most of the deaths of British troops in Helmand province…

According to the commanders, Iranian officials paid them to attend three-month courses during the winter.

They were smuggled across the border to the city of Zahidan, in southeast Iran, an hour’s drive from training camps in the desert…

Where is bin Laden, and when will the US Marines bag him?

Why is President Obama playing footsie with the terror president in Iran, ignoring those in Yazd and the rest of Iran who seek freedom?

Al-Qaeda-Linked Terrorist Claims American Support

More from Annie Jacobsen on the dancing terror masters over in Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Al-Qaeda-Linked Terrorist Claims American Support.

It should not be too difficult to confirm whether or not the images of Rigi flashed during the press conference match up to the Manas military base.

Good. Trust but verify.

At least Annie Jacobsen is keeping her judgement about who is really talking about what happened to Rigi and who is spouting a myth. My guess, each of the dancing terror masters mentions a bit of truth and a bit of fiction.

Notably silent: the US Marines over in Helmand Province. Cf., Sherlock Holmes’ famous observation concerning the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.

Lashkar Gah, Zahedan and thereabouts: Iran arrests top Sunni militant Abdolmalek Rigi

More action from the Baluchistan area of Afghanistan/Iran/Pakistan. Another Sunni terrorist picked up in Osama bin Laden’s stomping ground. Second quote from UK’s Guardian newspaper looks straight into the center of the interest, Zahedan.

Iran arrests top Sunni militant Abdolmalek Rigi

Abdolmalek Rigi, militant leader of the Jundallah (Soldiers of God) which had claimed a series of attacks against civilians and soldiers in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan Province from bases in Pakistan, was shown by Iranian state TV being led off a small plane by masked police.

Osama bin Laden, supposedly, has had involvement in this southeast part of Iran, the Sistan-Baluchistan province, a stone’s throw from Lashkar Gah in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Iran captures Sunni insurgent leader Abdolmalek Rigi

Mohammad Marzieh, prosecutor of Zahedan, capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, said: “Rigi’s arrest was made through security measures taken for a long period of time. He is now in Iran and will be handed to security and judicial officials.”

US Marine Corps, good hunting! 🙂

From Sarbaz to Lashkar Gah

Where is bin Laden?

He won’t be near the explosions.

And after the phony elections, none of the dictator’s men have used the suicide bomb against the citizens who want freedom in Iran.

Suicide bomber kills 29 in attack on Iran Guards
By Fredrik Dahl and Reza Derakhshi

TEHRAN (Reuters) – A suicide bomber killed six senior Revolutionary Guards commanders and 23 other people on Sunday in one of the boldest attacks on Iran’s most powerful military institution…

Citing a witness, state television said Sunday’s attack occurred when senior Revolutionary Guards officers attending a conference in the southeastern city of Sarbaz went to talk to a group of tribes people making baskets…

Citing authorities and experts, a presenter of English-language Press TV said “the finger of accusation is directly pointed at the Jundollah group,” referring to ethnic Baluch Sunni insurgents who have been blamed for previous attacks in the region.

Jundollah, which claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Shi’ite mosque in May that killed 25 people, says it is fighting for the rights of the Islamic Republic’s minority Sunnis.

Some analysts believe that Jundollah has evolved through shifting alliances with various parties, including the Taliban and Pakistan’s ISI intelligence service, who saw the group as a tool against Iran.

Predominantly Shi’ite Muslim Iran has also linked Jundollah to the Sunni Islamist al Qaeda network…

Iran is still not free.

U.S. Marines are in Helmand Province.

So there are three big questions right now in that part of the world:

  1. Where are the U.S. Marines?
  2. Where is Usama bin Laden?
  3. When will Iran be free?

No wonder the president is taking such a long time to make his play in Afghanistan.

Afghans and drugs picked up in bin Laden’s stomping ground

There is news from the western part of Usama bin Laden’s stomping grounds. The US Marines are to the east near Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.

Police Seize 236kg of Drugs in Eastern Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Law Enforcement Police seized over 236 kg of opium in daylong operations in the country’s eastern province of Southern Khorassan, a provincial police commander announced on Sunday.

Commander of Nahbandan police forces Gholam Hossein Parsa said that the police anti-drug squad was dispatched to a mission after receiving information about an illicit drug cargo in the province.

The commander noted that Nahbandan police discovered 146.1 kg of opium from a van during a patrolling operation, and also seized 62.4 kg of opium from a truck which was bound for Kerman in central Iran.

Meantime, the police forces seized another 28.2 kg of opium at a checkpoint near Nahbandan.

Parsa also announced that his forces had arrested 48 Afghan nationals for illegal entry into Iran.

I presume that Afghans sneaking into Iran is not unusual these days. Why is it news for the Fars News Agency?

We continue to wait for the US Marines to sweep up Osama bin Laden in their Helmand operations or push him across the border into the Sistan and Baluchistan province of Iran.

Afghanistan elections start in a few days. Can the US Marines and friends use the event to view the movement of people to polling places as well as people not moving to polling places? A lovely problem solving task.

People of Afghanistan, time for freedom and purple fingers.

Was Saad Bin Laden Managing Al-Qaeda from Iran?

More questions rise about bin Laden and Iran region near southern Afghanistan and Lashkar Gah, where US Marines now push contra Taliban and poppies.

Was Sa’ad Bin Laden Managing Al-Qaeda from Iran?
…For as long as the CIA refuses to comment on the senior al-Qaeda operatives that it kills, the FBI will remain unwilling to confirm or deny these deaths and the public will remain at the mercy of anonymous unnamed officials who provide misinformation. Until then, every unnamed intelligence official in the field will get to have their opinions published — like the one who told me: “Sa’ad bin Laden was a major player who helped manage his father’s terrorist organization from the safe haven of Iran.”

More about Lashkar Gah

One of the most popular items in this small-time weblog of mine is the Zahedan, bin Laden and Lashkar Gah, July 2009 post from a few weeks ago, nearly as popular as good old PersianKiwi!

There is a big US Marines operation near Lashkar Gah in Helmand province, and I conjecture whether this is a push to nab Osma bin Laden. Here is a 2006 post from Afghanistan Watch, in which a casual view of Helmand floats into view.

AUGUST 29, 2006
Bombing in Helmand; 17 dead, 47 wounded

Afghan civilians yesterday suffered a devastating bombing (the country’s third-most fatal) in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand. Only two incidents in the past have caused so many fatalities, and each were suicide bombings in Kandahar…

In general, one should be skeptical of incident reports in Helmand, as attacks attributed to Taliban insurgents are sometimes the result of criminal violence instead (Helmand is a primary poppy producing region.) But this attack appears to be insurgency-elated, and Karzai today declared, without elaboration, that it had been carried out "at the instruction of foreigners."

Two statements here seem interesting:

  1. Casual skepticism about Helmand would be lovely for a political fugitive hiding out there.
  2. No suicide bombs in Helmand means someone is trying not to "defecate" where they "eat."

Just S.W.A.G. but who knows? Old bin Laden has to be somewhere.

Napolitano in Islamabad

USA Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, is in Pakistan at the same time the Marines push deeper into Afghanistan’s Helmand province. Obviously not related. Yeah, right.

Officials: U.S. Missile Strike in Pakistan Kills 17 – FOXNews.com
Friday, July 03, 2009 AP

ISLAMABAD — U.S. missiles struck a training facility operated by Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud and a militant communication center Friday, killing 17 people and wounding 27 others, intelligence officials said….

They took place as U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano met government officials in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. She discussed topics of “mutual interest” with them, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said.

Once again, let’s review some recent events:

  1. Strange al Quaeda events in Zahedan, Iran.
  2. Pres. Obama contacts Grand Ayatollah Khameini.
  3. Massive street protests for freedom in Iran.
  4. Pres. Obama strangely keeps his mouth shut.
  5. The street protests go quiet but have not disappeared.
  6. Pakistan positions troops opposite the border with Helmand Province.
  7. Today, the US Marines launch operations into the south of Afghanistan, south of Lashkar Gah.
  8. Janet Napolitano shows up in Islamabad for discussion of unspecified topics.

Well, coincidences are fun but I am getting more agnostic about this series of events!

Zahedan, bin Laden and Lashkar Gah, July 2009

Today, the US Marines launch operations into the south of Afghanistan.

Marines exchange fire with Taliban in searing heat
Transport helicopters carried hundreds of Marines into the village of Nawa, some 20 miles south of the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah, in a region where no U.S. or other NATO troops have operated in large numbers…

Pakistan’s army said it had moved troops from elsewhere on its side of the Afghan border to the stretch opposite Helmand to try to stop any militants from fleeing the offensive. It gave no more details…

"We are kind of forging new ground here. We are going to a place nobody has been before," said Schoenmaker, 31, who commands Bravo Company of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment…

A month ago I made a visual conjecture that bin Laden might be holed up in the south of Afghanistan, between Kandahar and the Iranian frontier at Zabol, viz.

Zahedan, Iran, with a few other rumored locations for UBL, Zabol, Iran, Quetta, Pakistan, and the Taliban stronghold Kandahar, Afghanistan. (Click for large version.)

Zahedan, Iran, with a few other rumored locations for UBL, Zabol, Iran, Quetta, Pakistan, and the Taliban stronghold Kandahar, Afghanistan. (Click for large version.)

Not an especially new conjecture – many folks figured bin Laden was hiding in that part of the world.

But let’s review some recent events:

  1. About a month ago, there were strange al Quaeda events in Zahedan, Iran that smelled like a rat.
  2. Before the election, Pres. Obama contacts Grand Ayatollah Khameini.
  3. Then there were elections in Iran and massive street protests for freedom in Tehran and other cities.
  4. Pres. Obama strangely keeps his mouth shut even during the most dangerous days of the freedom movement in Iran.
  5. The street protests have calmed down a bit now — quiet but not disappeared.
  6. Pakistan positions troops opposite the border with Helmand Province.
  7. Today, the US Marines launch operations into the south of Afghanistan, south of Lashkar Gah.

They say the operation is about poppies and the coming Afghan election. Good.

But is this also the squeeze on bin Laden?

Are the Marines about to flush bin Laden and snap him up?
